Drawing Crisis

It Begins Between Ages 8 & 9

As children grow older, their desire to draw more realistically increases. When they notice that their drawings do not resemble realistic images in their heads, they begin experiencing what has become known as a "drawing crisis"

Children start to become self-conscious typically around age 8 or 9. This self-consciousness can manifest in their creative pursuits, such as drawing. At that age, as they may become more critical about themselves and how other may see them, they may also become more critical of their artwork and worry about what others think of it.

The Resolve

Providing opportunities for creative expression, such as art classes or free drawing time, can help build children's confidence in their artistic abilities, as well as self expression.

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Provide a supportive and encouraging environment: Children are more likely to feel confident in their artistic abilities when they feel supported and encouraged.

  2. Encourage experimentation: Encourage children to experiment with different art materials and techniques. This can help them to discover what they enjoy and what they are good at, which can boost their confidence.

  3. Provide opportunities for practice: Drawing, like any skill, requires practice to improve. Encourage children to draw regularly and provide opportunities for them to practice and experiment with different subjects, styles, and techniques.

  4. Model a positive attitude towards drawing: Children are influenced by the attitudes and behaviors of the adults around them. If you model a positive attitude towards drawing and other creative pursuits, children are more likely to view these activities as worthwhile and valuable.

  5. Provide constructive feedback: When providing feedback, focus on the positive aspects of the child's drawing and offer constructive criticism that is specific, actionable, and delivered in a supportive and encouraging manner.

By implementing these strategies, you can help children to feel more confident in their drawing abilities and encourage them to continue exploring their creativity.
